Festive Celebrations at Orestone Manor
The History of the Christmas Card

Found in the charming coastal village of Maidencombe in South Devon, with the English Riviera as its vibrant backdrop, Orestone Manor is a location with a storied and fascinating history.

Did you know, for example, that our hotel has a connection with one of the festive season’s most iconic traditions?

Our beautiful Georgian manor, a stunning country house hotel by the sea, was once the home of Victorian narrative painter John Callcott Horsley, famed for creating the world’s first Christmas card!

Built in 1830, Orestone became a sanctuary for Horsley—a peaceful coastal lodge and an inspiring retreat away from bustling London.

In the early years, Horsley enjoyed this sprawling house as a coastal getaway. Orestone’s spacious rooms, warm parlours, and expansive gardens made it the ideal setting for gatherings and lively conversations about art, industry, and the Victorian world.

The birth of the Christmas card tradition

an invaluable piece of history

In 1843, during his time at Orestone Manor, John Callcott Horsley made a lasting mark on Christmas traditions. His friend, Sir Henry Cole – later the first director of the Victoria and Albert Museum – commissioned him to create a Christmas card. Horsley’s design captured the joy of the season, with a family gathered around a holiday table, celebrating together across generations. However, it was the card’s playful detail of a child sipping wine that caused quite a stir in Victorian society!

Though controversial, the card was a success, and Cole printed 1,000 copies to send as festive greetings. Today, only a few originals remain, making Horsley’s design an invaluable piece of history. It was here at Orestone that the Christmas card tradition began — a tradition that continues to bring joy and connection each year.

Family ties to a Victorian legend

Horsley’s ties to British history extended beyond art. His sister was married to Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the pioneering engineer known for his visionary projects like the Great Western Railway. In 1857, Horsley painted a portrait of his famous brother-in-law here at Orestone, a piece now displayed in the National Portrait Gallery. Brunel’s connection to the area made Orestone a natural gathering spot, bringing family and friends together for memorable evenings of music, conversation, and festivities.
